Iona—Stirrings
16″ x 12″
Archival pigment print
Placing the light pattern of my installation Inside Void: Become into the space of the chapel at Iona’s nunnery was a natural merger that helps to evoke the feeling of inner refinement and mystery I felt there.
In the quietude of this ruin, with its graceful vaulted ceiling and intimate scale, it felt feminine and focused. Intended to be a sacred space for a very few, the large Abbey down the road held the masses, while this place served the women’s needs.
Iona is a small jewel of an island in the inner Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland. Having been a pilgrimage site for thousands of years, it still is. I always feel at home there, and have traced its contours like the palm of my hand.
