The Talking Stick for Speaking the Truth of One’s Own Heart was originally created as part of the Through Eyes of Myth a Voice is Heard installation which explored the nature of storytelling and tools of the storyteller.

In a world of increasing loudness, there are times when quietude needs be sought, and full attention given to the deep messages of the soul, feelings of the self, and desires of the heart. The presence of a totemic object can introduce a space of silence, encourage listening on the part of the self and others present.

Madrone is a hard wood, pale ivory just under its smooth burgundy skin; sensual to the touch. The undulating curves of this talking stick speak to the emotional nature of making such a true connection, whether hesitant or fluid. Pearls course around the wand-like stick as reminders that what is difficult in life can become grist for the soul, and a beauty to be cherished.

Dangling on a thread from the end of the stick is a small white feather, like a fishing pole lure gently inviting a response. Small glass madrone-burgundy beads dot the thread, interspersed with the pearls, reminding that the blood of life courses through the heart, that words and gestures that arise will bear the heartbeat of the individual. Madrone is fitting for this piece, for it burns hot, which is why the handheld end is wrapped in a silken cord.
